“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.”- Frank Herbert
“Teachers” are the builders of our characters. They are the very stranger beings, we were first introduced to in a new environment - “School”. We have heard “ Charity begins at home” and so does learning. But how open are we to the idea of this noble duty that these teachers provide; have been questionable in the past few months given the scenario of the pandemic hit taking a toll on future prospects for students and guardians on both ends respectively.
Now, you might have a legitimate curiosity on why should you be reading this article?
To which I say , ” it will be worth a shot.” - from someone who started her teaching career at 18, from home tuitions to someone having taught in esteemed organizations ranging from pre-schools kids to AFCAT/NDA student in real time.
FACT : Lately, a lot of videos have been floating around on the social media platforms about students mocking their teachers online with e-mail ids usernames as funny as cartoon to movie characters names making it really difficult for teachers to take up attendance or peacefully conduct a lecture.
CONCERN: These are mostly the mischievous ones of the real class who are aware that their ‘not so tech -savy’ teacher will ever get hold of them. Which might be true to an extent until its turns nasty. But who are at loss? Shouldn’t that be taking a toll and be the real concern about future ?
FACT: Skill is defined as “expertise in a subject” whereas knowledge as “facts, theotrical or practical understanding of a subject”. Now as parents are exposed to the online classes being conducted within the home premises are taken aback by petty concerns about speech , tone, conduct towards their ward and more. Which can/ should be a concern.
REAL CONCERN: Learning is not confined to bookworms without practical applications of the same taught. Isn’t concept a mandate in lieu of presentation instead. Do these “millennial teens” really need the helicopter parents in this regard? “helicopter parent”- one or the other parent keeping an ear on what the teacher from the other end of the screen is teaching. What results is one single frown, or a disgust word to counter their skill allows the student to develop a disrespect or inattentiveness thereafter.
FACT: With everything moving from pen and paper to digital forums, homeschooling might be the future of Indian education like in most western countries. Times are drastically changing and the ones that adapt well are sure to excel. Teachers now are trying to use tools, learn skills, engage students with same digital platforms and helping students build the one-on-one relation with “learning and growing together” being the sole motto.
We are the people who believe in “Guru Devo Bhava”- lets abide by it too. Teachers are mind engineers, they are the life directors. Let’s not undermine them.
P.S.- For my teachers, I am because you were.
Happy Teacher’s Day
