News in modern times referred to ‘information about current events through the testimony of observers and witnesses to events. Something based on facts and not opinions, striving in the public interests and truth over selfish agendas and assumptions.’

The background: For a long time in the history of the known, ‘news’ was the plural of new; anything new that people heard about and shared was circulated by people in physical proximity and word of mouth. But with the advent of the printing press into being, by Johannes Gutenberg after the 1440s, it made its way easier for the masses. The core idea of news spreading through these printed forms was pretty simple whatsoever it had its effect on, to convince their readers to buy a detergent powder or vote for any party.
From the Second World War scenario and the Stalin’s Time in Russia, this mass sharing of information from the persuasion perspective started taking showing its damaging effects like It started to raise armies, instigate violent mobs, the Maoist Cultural Revolution, etc.
Modern News Rectified: News in modern times referred to ‘information about current events through the testimony of observers and witnesses to events. Something based on facts and not opinions, striving in the public interests and truth over selfish agendas and assumptions.’ Post-independence in the era of the ’70s, emergency papers were clamped down upon, editors were thrown to jail and the negativity upsurged. With the end of the emergency, the India Express, The Statesman stood up to revolt against the government in power and investigating facts. Henceforth, becoming the voice of the masses making their way to being the fourth pillar of democracy.
Privatization and profit-making: this is where the advertisers come to play. Wherein the actual news was cut short and product base advertisers took the great space to cater the maximum reader base to meet the profit margins of the printing and distributing cost. The power shift from ‘editorial’ to the ‘advertisers’. The truth here, is you make money, the house does but the profession gets undermined and compromised.
‘Infotainment’ business agenda: The 24×7 news updates came into existence, based on an underlying idea of being a source of double as entertainment with havoc brightened graphics, segment titles, and opinionated viewpoint triggers. The core was to make ‘propaganda profitable’ with people going into their own echo chambers and favored party biases. Resultant was, competition among channels with daily soaps, reality shows versus news channels yet again breaking rules on news itself bringing in the concept of TRP’s aka, Television Rating Points which ironically also decides the price of the advertisements that run on these channels. Higher the TRP, the more money the channel makes.
Reign of Post Truth Era: Without the proper truth investigation the aim of breaking news on the channels drastically shifted from evidence, researches, and study to who rather brings the news on the table at the earliest to break the news, making it more argumentative in nature and emotionally driven content over actual facts. The idea of ‘gatekeeping’ or ‘filtration’ was by and large shoved out of the window and entering into the 24×7 news cycle became the foremost ground of broadcasting news.
The pushing of narratives henceforth brings to you the idea undermined ‘Breaking rules to make breaking news’.
